1. Identify the exact setup

Record year, make, model and variant, including cab/body, engine and drivetrain where relevant. Keep approved modification documents with the original ratings.

2. Separate ratings from measurements

GVM, GCM, ATM, GTM and coupling limits are ratings. Current loaded axle and towball readings are measurements. Copy the exact source label and leave unknown figures blank.

3. Check all the limits

A towing maximum alone cannot establish payload or axle headroom. Document passengers, accessories and cargo, then compare the complete loaded combination.

Worked example · invented figures

Count towball mass once in the combination

This example explains mass accounting for a conventional ball-coupled trailer without a weight distribution hitch. These are not Ranger, MU-X or D-Max specifications and are not prefilled calculator inputs.

Before coupling: Loaded car: 2,600 kg
Total loaded caravan: 2,800 kg
Measured coupling load: 250 kg
After coupling: Car axles together: 2,850 kg
Caravan axles together: 2,550 kg
Combined mass: 5,400 kg
Check the accounting: 2,600 + 2,800 = 5,400 kg
2,850 + 2,550 = 5,400 kg
Do not add the 250 kg again.

Compare coupled vehicle mass with GVM and combined mass with GCM. Check each axle, actual trailer mass, ATM/GTM ratings, towing and coupling limits separately. Rear-axle load can rise by more than the coupling load because of leverage; these totals cannot determine individual axle loads or confirm a compliant setup.

Permitted vertical load at the coupling, not the trailer towing mass. Check the applicable vehicle and fitted towbar/coupling documentation. Leave blank if unknown; do not infer it from towing capacity.
