TowSense modification pathways
Modifying a light vehicle in the Northern Territory
The Northern Territory distinguishes minor, basic, significant and extensive modifications. MVR assesses light vehicles against the National Code of Practice alongside the applicable NT process.
Some minor changes may be made without approval. Basic modifications may be assessed at a government inspection facility; confirm the classification for the whole package rather than relying on an accessory label.
Significant or extensive modifications require Technical Advisory Committee assessment, and engineering certification may also be required. Discuss the proposal with MVR before work, including any GVM increase and the supporting engineering evidence.
Prepare the exact vehicle, original ratings, existing modification records and proposed parts. Confirm application, inspection and registration steps with MVR, and retain the resulting documents. This guide does not grant permission to modify.
Prepare a modification evidence worksheetFree evidence preparation for four modification groups across all eight Australian states and territories. No approval or certification is provided.
